As a result of our conversation, I decided to dust-off an old post, give it a few updates, and pass along my thoughts, which can be best summarized as “ Ideas Don’t Equal Innovation. “ It is my hope to help dispel the myth that ideas are inherently good things.

Hay Group, a global management consulting firm, released its 2010 Best Companies for Leadership Study and Top 20 list. The study ranks the best companies for leadership around the globe and examines how those companies develop current and future leaders. In the process, they are gaining important competitive advantages.
This is the definition of presence, and it is only when we operate in the present that real creativity, growth and innovation occur. Operating in excess of that threshold will cause increased stress, lack of attention to detail and errant decisioning. Is your rubber-band stretched so tight that it’s about to snap?
These silos are staffed with legions of “tenured&# COBOL and C++ programmers, as well as &# tenured&# IT managers overseeing the operation. Tenure Inhibits Change and Cripples Innovation : Organizations that favor tenure also tend to be prone to majoring in the minors.
Rarely will you come across a static opportunity in the sense that it will stand idle and wait for you to act…Significant opportunities are not only scarce, but they typically operate on the principal of diminishing returns. So much so, that if you don’t think timing is everything - think again. I Think Not.
The harsh reality is that great numbers of leaders continue to operate in a vacuum by sequestering themselves away in the corner office and attempting to lead from afar. So the real question is this…how does a CEO get to the point of being so disconnected from operations that he or she just doesn’t have a clue?
Few things are more critical to your efforts in increasing your revenue growth and corporate sustainability than understanding the value of disruptive innovation. So why do so many established and often well managed companies struggle with disruptive innovation? or my personal favorite, “We need to focus on our core business.&#
Even solid world class institutions like the University of California Berkeley under the leadership of Chancellor Birgeneau & Provost Breslauer are firing employees, staff, faculty and part-time lecturers through “Operational Excellence (OE) initiative”: last year 600 were fired, this year 300. While entrepreneurs are clearly talented innovators and visionaries, most first time entrepreneurs don’t have prior experience as a CEO.
The best leaders are focused on leading change and innovation to keep their organizations fresh, dynamic and growing. They find ways to consistently engage them and incorporate them into their innovation and planning initiatives. Bottom line – leaders who build a static business doom themselves to failure.
What about competing against the innovation of others that could cause the obsolescence of your product or service? Well actually, no it’s not. All business (for profit or not) provide goods, services, or intellectual property/capital to a market (or markets) for some form of consideration.
At an organizational level have you focused so much on process improvements and incremental gains that you’ve failed to recognize opportunity and innovate? Let me ask you a question – Have you become so efficient that you’ve rendered yourself ineffective? Are you efficient or effective, or do you know? I Think Not.
That said, it is nonetheless safe to say that CEOs who find a way to focus their efforts on values, vision, mission, strategy, team building, innovation, networking, and branding will be the CEOs who achieve the highest and most sustainable levels of success.

Gut instincts can only take you so far in life, and anyone who operates outside of a sound decisioning framework will eventually fall prey to an act of oversight, misinformation, misunderstanding, manipulation, impulsivity or some other negative influencing factor. They make bad decisions. I Think Not.
Closing gaps becomes much easier when you can position differences as non-adversarial and operate within a framework of trust. So what is your role in influencing creativity and innovation in others? We know it isn’t enough to simply add creativity to a list of values your organization espouses or to bring in consultants who get staff keyed up about innovating. Innovative ideas tend to require more risk than “more of the same”.
