From 1996 to 2015, the number of publicly traded companies in the United States alone dropped nearly 50%. This phase was loosely called leverage buy out (LBO) from about 1979 to 1990 and included over 2,000 LBOs. Traditionally, PE firms bring financial discipline and strategic clarity to firms they acquire.
