I F you are building a startup, you’ll find no shortage of people who are willing to give you advice, particularly when it comes to raising financing. Unfortunately, much of this advice is wrong. Most startup advice, like most myths, have a kernel of truth to them, but you have to know when to apply it and when to skip it.

Bottom line…The leadership lesson here is that whenever you have a message to communicate (either directly, or indirectly through a third party) make sure that said message is true & correct, well reasoned, and substantiated by solid business logic that is specific, consistent, clear and accurate. I want to frame my thoughts on the topic of significance by beginning with an excerpt from my book “ Leadership Matters…The CEO Survival Manual “: “By the time you reach the CEO level you should be striving to move beyond success and towards significance. Doing anything for the wrong reasons is not likely to turn out well.
And yet, what is crystal clear to me after 20 years in leadership roles is that those ingredients, while important to success, aren't enough if you've forgotten the fundamentals of being positive, learning from others, being honest and the kind of person people want to work with.
