By Linda Fisher Thornton I have noticed that when people speak from LABELS (their group identity, their beliefsystem, their affiliation), they are talking from the interests of that label. If a label is broad enough - like the label "human" - it can automatically be an ethical and inclusive conversation.
Self-awareness allows you to separate yourself from what’s happening around you to identify your thoughts, feelings, physical state, and beliefsystems. Differentiator 2: Work Ethic and Personal Responsibility. A good work ethic is based not on time put in but on results achieved. Self-Awareness. Consistency matters.
In a business enterprise, leaders must take care of employees who, in turn, are responsible for taking care of customers, stakeholders, and related outside parties, such as the government and the community, in an ethical manner. Informal power results from their core beliefsystem. Is “ethical leadership” an oxymoron?
Understand the clash of beliefsystems. Whereas a lawyer is paid to win the case for his or her client by any legal and ethical means possible, a judge is not. Your default setting to pressure situations is directly proportional to your ability to problem solve, to live in the solution, and to lead. Be a judge, not a lawyer.
When was the last time you paused to reflect on your beliefsystem? Work ethic. By educating, encouraging ethical behavior, and inspiring people to do their best, we can reduce the need for excessive rules and regulations. As Alexander Hamilton said, If you dont stand for something, youll fall for everything.
Put another way, most leaders haven’t figured out how to deal with the challenges of integrating different generations and their respective beliefsystems. Here’s the thing – cross generational corporate experiments aren’t working too well. Dismiss them, patronize them, or otherwise marginalize them and they’ll walk out the door.
I don’t know about you, but it’s almost as if we have raised a generation of leaders who feel they have a moral and ethical obligation to be politically correct – WRONG. Unfortunately that belief remains in tact, often lurking undistinguished in the background, as people rise up the corporate ladder. How sad is this?
Here’s your self “why” test: Beliefsystem failing in product – you don’t think your product is really better than the competition’s. Beliefsystem failing in company – you’ve lost faith in the company’s ability to perform. Leave ethically. That will get you to an understanding of your self-thinking.
You’ve placed a value on yourself that reflects in your selling skills, your attitude, your beliefsystem, your truthfulness, and your ethics. How you feel about yourself. How you feel about the customer and their buying process. That’s you. And then there is the customer.
This book will explore how our institutional leaders can make claim once again to ethical, fair, and purposeful practices that underscore the value of human beings as the linchpins of our society. Leaders sometimes forget that new hires are a reflection of the beliefsystems they established.
Values are about people viewing the world entirely through the lens of their beliefsystems. Your Credo: These are the values and the beliefsystem to which you subscribe, and/or a shared behavior and code of ethics that you're working within. but we're not so sure we can.
6) Insights, Beliefs, Systems of Thought. (7) Generational work ethics and why young people need executive mentoring to 'go the distance' in their careers, offering value to the company and profession. This step is detailed in my monograph, "7 Layers of Wisdom": (1) Glimmer of An Idea. (2) 2) Learning Curve. (3)
It's the company's deeply embedded beliefsystem, its prevailing ethics, and the way people within the company interact with each other and with customers. Such seismic moves would be unsettling in any company, but the real problem is that HP is not trusted to execute on its new strategy well.
If you're going to live a life that matters, you need an ethical compass: a beliefsystem with a true north that points toward values that are in some sense enduringly, meaningfully good. And so respect is earned — and love given — not just to those who pander, but those who matter. Where's your true north?
The brain is built to perceive the world through structured lenses — cognitive scaffolds on which we hang our knowledge and beliefsystems. By ‘framework’ I mean any one of a range of conceptual or beliefsystems — either explicitly articulated or implicitly followed. Stretching your mind is hard.
