Here’s the thing - leadership and conflict go hand-in-hand. Leadership is a full-contact sport, and if you cannot address conflict in a healthy, productive fashion then you should not be in a leadership role. If so, you likely have issues with conflict.
You cannot separate leadership from decisioning, for like it or not, they are inexorably linked. Peter Senge addressed this dilemma in his book The Fifth Discipline and accurately discerned that sound leadership decisions are based on systemic analysis before making a decision. They make bad decisions.

But that is one of the many characteristics of leadership, doing what you perceive to be the right thing, even if it goes against the crowd or you are – initially anyway – a bystander. How about our grandparents? Would they have acted differently? Would I have risked my life to haul Seaborn’s ass off of Everest?
If you think you don’t have time to Tweet or Blog, the reality is that you don’t have time not to. Here’s the bottom line: How can you possibly justify not communicating with your key constituents, stakeholders, and influencers in an environment of their choosing, where they are actively having conversations in real time?
Just because something is written in a vision or mission statement, placed on a website, included in company collateral material, or frequently espoused by corporate leadership as a competitive value proposition doesn’t necessarily mean its true. Rarely do I speak with an executive who hasn’t drunk the talent messaging Kool-Aid.
Over the years I’ve come to believe that there is only one sure fire litmus test for measuring leadership success, and to the chagrin of many reading this post, it has little to do with what happens on the job. Being a leader at home requires a different set of learnable competencies.
Being able to discern and debate subjective positions with objectivity is an art form that must be present for effective leadership. Understanding and respecting other’s perceptions is such a critical part of being an effective leader that absent this ability I truly believe you cannot be effective in a leadership role.
Emails, voicemails, instant messages, text messages, blogs, Tweets, Facebook updates, etc., People simply don’t have the time to listen to, or read, unnecessarily long forms of communication. The second trend is technology’s recognition of the first trend. simply don’t lend themselves to the indulgence of pompous grandeur.
