Greenspan had a long career as a private economic analyst and forecaster behind him when he was appointed Federal Reserve chairman in 1987. I had an idea of constructing a certain statistical procedure. I came armed with lots of questions, but ended up only getting to two or three. Why Fed chairmen can’t do research.
