In high-stress interactions, our walls go up, and our armor comes on and were ready to protect ourselves in any way we can. Our bodies tense up, and were on the defensive. Those in leadership are often scared of losing their edge. They dont want to be too soft or too Zen because theyre nervous to be more human in a work setting.
This fall, I embarked on a worldwide quest to gain insights and perspectives on global leadership in the 21st century. To do this effectively, I sought to understand two things: Elucidate the emerging leadership traits and competencies that are most relevant today.
Some organizations respond with well-meaning exhortations to “just get along,” or they encourage private chats with humanresources or senior management. The bottom line : We don’t have to like a person to work with them, but we do have to have a level of respect for them. Yet quite often, there’s no action taken at all.
But now that they are starting to retire, what will happen to their stable work approach and traditional top-down leadership practices? They prefer a bottoms-up approach, and want to feel involved and valued in the workplace. Nine clear leadership traits emerged. So where do we start? That’s what I did.
Humanresource departments are instilling D&I training for hiring managers and discussing their role in hiring diverse employees and creating a culture of inclusion. The reality is that diversity and inclusion is a crucial ingredient for creating a workplace that fosters a culture of leadership and healthy employee engagement.
