Of course, many managers don’t even try to learn from 5 leading management thinkers to do their jobs better over their career. So for many people just learning from Ackoff, Deming, Scholtes etc. they would be far ahead of the path they are now for their career.

To me this is a great example of extending Deming’s ideas with a great deal of useful content on how to effectively become more customer focused. Some are little (pass the time while waiting in line); some are big (find a more fulfilling career). Dr. Deming would talk about the importance of knowing what business you were in.
I took this photo after presenting a Deming 2 1/2 day seminar in Boston (at the Boston Fine Arts Museum – see more photos ). And maybe I am wrong and they really have all sorts of great things they are doing to meet customer needs in innovative ways. The benefits they bring are very hard to calculate.
General Motors wasn’t my ideal workplace after having read Deming’s Out of the Crisis and learning a bit about Lean manufacturing in college. If possible, I wanted to work in something closer to the Deming environment. I was told that Dr. Deming had taught some workshops within GM, particularly the Powertrain division in the 1980s.
Edwards Deming is widely famous for “Deming’s 14 points” and “Seven Deadly Diseases”. One of these deadly disease according to Deming is “ Running a company on visible figures alone ”. Deming opined that everything that is critical for business performance may not be measurable. Well said, Tanmay!
