This is a skill I believe many leaders do not develop until later in their careers. I mentioned an example of this in a comment on a recent Ron Edmondson post dealing with Leading People Older Than You. I especially liked the comment on balancing when to interject yourself vs. letting others resolve issues on their own.

In order for us to empathize, we must listen so that we understand what others are dealing with, what’s happening in their careers and in their lives.
