Many organizations operate out of the belief that people in leadership need a tough mindset to be effective. Develop a stronger relationship. If you can get past the intimidating façade to the human beneath, it may be possible to begin developing a stronger relationship with your intimidating leader.
It takes a blending of approach to craft the right message and this will not happen when operating in a vacuum. When someone asks me about an operational matter in the corridor and I haven’t got the key points mentally articulated, I am all over the place.
Also, a common response is to confuse a sales engine, fulfillment process, operational process, technology platform, or any number of other areas as business models, where this is not the case. Furthermore, a business plan, strategic plan, marketing plan, capital formation plan, exit plan, etc., are also not business models.
Making sound decisions is a skill set that needs to be developed like any other. By developing a qualitative and quantitative filtering mechanism for your decisioning process you can make better decisions in a shorter period of time. They make bad decisions. And in some cases they compound bad decision upon bad decision.
Nowhere will you find a better model for servant leadership, vision casting, discipleship, good decisioning, discernment, self-leadership, intentional leadership, crisismanagement, character based leadership, etc. All great leaders develop a sense of their blind-spots and weaknesses as they mature.
If you believe you possess a fully developed competency in a section give yourself 10 points. They understand the need for talent and are effective at recruiting, deployment, development and retention of tier-one talent. Should the traits mentioned above be more formally cultivated in leadership development programs? And there’s no professional development without personal development… In this case, I suspect those leaders who find it difficult to express their compassion publicly could do so with some developmental work.
The harsh reality is that great numbers of leaders continue to operate in a vacuum by sequestering themselves away in the corner office and attempting to lead from afar. So the real question is this…how does a CEO get to the point of being so disconnected from operations that he or she just doesn’t have a clue?

If your company’s long-term business plan requires the acquisition, or retention of the uber employee then your business not only has a risk management issue, but it is likely not scalable.
I’m a huge advocate of refining initiatives that allow any level of talent to be developed to the maximum potential. Leaders and non-leaders alike need career-pathing, training and development. I’m just not a believer in attempting to label someone as a leader, and develop them as such when they are clearly not.

Develop Customer Scorecards : You should actually profile your clientele such that you understand the difference between good accounts and bad accounts.
Take a sincere interest in the success of others, work on your likability factor, become adept at gaining commitment, develop your authority and control, and have access to things of value or scarcity and your influence with others will increase. Bottom line…Don’t manipulate for personal gain, rather facilitate for mutual benefit.
The good news is that there is a cure for all four of the preceding problems: Items one through three can be solved with an emphasis on leadership development and talent management, and item four can be solved by holding the board of directors accountable for CEO performance and firing an apathetic CEO.
