2011 ASA Deming Lecture by Roger Hoerl, GE Global Research: The World Is Calling; Should We Answer? Roger starts by discussing some areas of Deming’s work that are not getting the focus they deserve. I also want to talk about Deming’s emphasis on the big picture, the big problems.
Muller’s The Tyranny of Metrics (2018) is a book that Dr. Deming would have surely appreciated. The bulk of Muller’s research is devoted to case studies in colleges, elementary schools, health care systems, policing, the military, business, finance, philanthropy and foreign aid. Few people understood measurement as well as Dr. Deming.
One of Dr. Deming’s 7 deadly diseases is: Emphasis on short-term profits: short-term thinking. Thomas Johnson and Anders Broms, the authors provide many good thoughts on the problems of accounting measures and management. It is easy to focus on short term goals and use a somewhat simple short term figure to measure success.
From Zero Defects to “Just-in-Time” production, zero remains an admired stretch goal and also represents one of the two endpoints of “Management by Extremes.” The other is infinity, as in the pursuit of better , coupled with the ambition to continually improve.
