Innovation is perhaps the most used word in corporate boardrooms today. Add to this, the challenges of hyper-competitive landscape, organization cultures, shortage of talent and agility to move swiftly and the challenge of innovation compounds. Moreover, innovation is not as simple as having fresh ideas and executing them well.

The way organizations work is changing because of technology, and this is causing the rise of “digital trace data.” It’s a mindset that has underlined the recent desire to have data underpin decision-making.

I was happy to see John Hunter share the article on the Deming Institute blog last year , along with some context. The SHS journal article starts with a brief introduction, not in the original document, by Dr. Deming that summarizes the key points, all of which are still relevant today. The lesson learned? To me this is a great example of extending Deming’s ideas with a great deal of useful content on how to effectively become more customer focused. Now there are some times when using technology to provide good service just isn’t worth the effort. Often though businesses just are stuck in their fax-thinking or physical-store-thinking or app-thinking and fail to use a technology that would provide great benefit to their users.
The first decade of the 21st century brought about an incredible amount of technological advances — Facebook, Twitter, Android, iPod/iTunes/iPhone/iPad, and many other innovations transformed how we communicate, work, and live.
