In today’s post I’ll deal with a skill set that all successful CEOs excel at…managing board relations. What’s interesting to me is that of all the constituencies that CEOs must deal with, the relationship with a board of directors is among the easiest to manage.

Depreciating Your Assets . Through depreciation of a given asset, a business can identify the cost of the property over its expected lifespan. Depreciation is a significant aspect since it adds to the overall expenses of a business; hence, its taxable income within a given financial period.
Confidence is about managing your self-doubt in order to do what you need to do to achieve your long-term goals. The majority of failures began to deteriorate by doubting or depreciating themselves, or by losing confidence in their own ability. W E ALL POSSESS some confidence, but we all could use more of it.

Anyone paying attention to current events has recently witnessed that it doesn’t really matter whether you’re a politician, investment banker, CEO, or just an average citizen, when it comes to making a simple decision, managing a crisis, or attempting to exploit an opportunity, timing is everything. The prior are often footnotes.
I’m a huge advocate of refining initiatives that allow any level of talent to be developed to the maximum potential. Leaders and non-leaders alike need career-pathing, training and development. Here are just some examples for you to consider: Do you say you care about your people, your organization and your Customers? How does your walk prove it? How does your walk prove it?
Take a sincere interest in the success of others, work on your likability factor, become adept at gaining commitment, develop your authority and control, and have access to things of value or scarcity and your influence with others will increase. i.e. Will my employees ever respect/lean on an assistant manager rather than the manager?
Perhaps you were the right person for the job initially, but has the company outgrown your management ability? Priority number two is team building and talent management. Did you bestow the title upon yourself simply because you had the authority to do so, or are you the right person for the job? What does a CEO really do anyway?
Developing effective conflict resolution skill sets are an essential component of a building a sustainable business model. If so, you likely have issues with conflict. The only thing worse than what I’ve just described is leadership that doesn’t recognize it and/or does nothing about it.
If you believe you possess a fully developed competency in a section give yourself 10 points. Perhaps most importantly they have the ability to align interests and sell the vision unifying leadership, management, staff and external stakeholders as well. Great leaders understand how to manage conflict and close positional gaps.
Have you figured out how to apply the laws of scarcity to brand management? While a brand without exposure is not much of a brand, I consistently find that brand exposure is an aspect of brand management that is all too often overlooked as a success metric. Give me real leaders who possess courage, vision, and a bias toward action, and spare me the timidity of mediocre managers posing as leaders. If change and innovation weren’t key contributors to sustainable success, and the enterprise could just run on auto-pilot, you could replace the CEO with a General Manager.
Nowhere will you find a better model for servant leadership, vision casting, discipleship, good decisioning, discernment, self-leadership, intentional leadership, crisis management, character based leadership, etc. All great leaders develop a sense of their blind-spots and weaknesses as they mature.
