Larry Spears was the CEO of the Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership for nearly two decades. Larry is also the one who studied Greenleaf’s writings for years, extracted and shared the very popular 10 Characteristics of Servant-Leadership. A very humble man, he often points to Robert Greenleaf as the source of his message.
Servant leadership is about always putting others first. Some of my favorite takeaways include the Ten Characteristics of a Servant Leader , as told by Larry C. Finally, I found powerful the list below shared by basketball player Tamika Catchings as she reflected on her time being coached by University of Tennessee basketball coach Pat Summitt.

The current public personas of people whom we would title “leaders” are a far cry from the model Robert Greenleafdeveloped during his 40 years with American Telephone and Telegraph (now AT&T). In 1964 he took an early retirement to found the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership. institutions was not working.
It’s from Robert Greenleaf in his book, Servant Leadership , where he wrote, “The most difficult question to ask oneself is, ‘Does what I have to say improve upon the silence?’” When you ask them, they develop people by helping them to think critically and solve their own problems. The impact of that is multi-faceted.
Greenleaf, used this test: “Do those served grow as persons? Servant leaders develop trust by showing competence, acting with integrity, demonstrating care, and keeping commitments. Leaders who focus on results, relationships, and trust bring Greenleafs definition of servant leadership to life. So, how do we define it?
Perhaps together though, we may develop great solutions. Greenleaf's words about foresight are very much true during these challenging times, as they were before and during the 2008 crisis. As Greenleaf wrote, there is a healing in the process of serving others. One of the texts was Robert Greenleaf’s booklet The Servant Leader. Then I read the book by Herman Hesse, Journey to the East, which is where Greenleaf first got his ideal of Servant Leadership. Why do you advocate Servant Leadership?
