While this sounds simple enough at face value, I have consistently found that one of the most often overlooked leadership attributes is that of a positive attitude. If you struggle with recruiting, team building, and leadership development you likely have a bad attitude. The simple answer is that you can’t…it just won’t work.
I have noticed pastors making mistakes with church finances. When I came into ministry it was after a long business career, so I’m sometimes considered unique in my involvement or interest in our church finances. Working with different churches over the years, I’ve seen lots of approaches by pastors in this area of finances.
In fact, in most cases I actually prefer to have my thinking challenged – this doesn’t threaten me as a leader, it improves my leadership ability. Anyone who has ever been in a leadership position has had to deal with the inevitable tough relationship that causes more than its fair share of brain damage.
And, many times, you have to be in the church at least a year before you could serve in leadership. This process might work well for certain committees – such as finance committee, but it doesn’t seem to work as well for others, such as the garden committee or the usher committee. I love teams.
That way even when finances are tight, development keeps going. Read a book together – The number of leadership books easily outnumber the months a team will be together. I’d recommend my book 7 Myths of Leadership , but that would seem self-serving.) Plus, check out the other Lifeway Leadership Podcasts.
That person will likely continue to struggle handling finances the rest of their ministry – many times not even knowing why – just knowing they had they bumped up against a policy somewhere. Policies make people in leadership positions feel better, but they seldom solve real problems. Do the hard work. Not always easiest.

If you’re objecting to your personal preference or out of the traditions set by men, humble yourself and follow his leadership unless The Lord removes him.

Granted this takes creativity, especially when finances are stretched, but always hearing “we can’t afford that” or “we aren’t big enough to do that” is never motivating to a team. With good leadership desperation can often lead to innovation. . The world is full of naysayers and doomsayers. We need to be agents of hope.
Over the years of writing this blog, the more I have written about leadership and tied it to the church the more critics would email to say I shouldn’t. I shouldn’t tie leadership and the church together so closely. People have said I focus too much on leadership and not enough on Jesus. I mention Him a lot.)
Next for me is our state leadership and then federal leadership. He’s got a course on crisis leadership (and lots of other resources) I love that he’s partnering with David Kinnaman and Gloo to study the pulse of the church each week. They are a trusted and reliable source on issues of law and finance.
If I were to come alongside of your church, (and I’m certainly happy to do that through my coaching ministry), I would help your staff or leadership think through each of these in a brainstorming session. But they’ve simply grown tired, changed leadership, or don’t get the focus they once did. That’s a keeper. What needs tweaking?

Right now we have assignments for building, music, finance, missions, education and chairman. Frankly, that almost seems unusual for pastors, churches and church leadership. Not magical questions.
Chances are, regardless of your church size, you have some untapped leadership already in your church. When I left the church where I was pastor we had seven amazing people on our finance committee, for example. They were godly, intelligent and absolutely brilliant in the handling of finances. In my last church, some of our best leaders on our finance committee, for example, had never served in leadership in the church. The final thing I would say is you have to be intentional in leadership recruitment. They were, however, tremendous leaders in their careers. People come to your church and see things working.
On the other hand, an employee who is taking advantage of a more casual organizational structure, which is a style of leadership I typically prefer, is a problem to be solved. They make people in leadership positions feel better about the problem, but they almost never solve real problems. And, they were truly trying to help people.

Enlist some support.
