Middlemanagers are a much-maligned presence in the workplace, with few people having much good to say about them. However, research from Wharton reminds us that this image is often unfair and that middlemanagers can play a crucial role in a functioning workplace.
Middlemanagers are often much-maligned individuals who are seen as doing little but push paper around and try and make themselves as important as possible. Of course, the reality is somewhat different, with middlemanagers playing a crucial role in things like innovation , idea management , ethics , and so on.
Management has come in for a tough time lately. A Monster.com survey ranked British managers as the worst in the world, whilst Ratan Tata suggested managers at Jaguar Land Rover lacked a suitable work ethic when he first took over the firm. You are not watching this post, click to start watching

Values such as work ethic, excellence and open-mindedness can be cultivated with practice. Some leaders who do this fail to develop what is arguably the most important character value: humility. Humility is not easily developed when you have wealth, power and/or status. It’s especially difficult to develop humility without the help of others.
I like this definition. It is consistent with our research where we heard respondents consistently use the terms “connect&# or “feel connected&# to describe the emotions they experience in relation to their organization’s identity, the people they work with and their day-to-day work. why is everyone smiling?

No doubt the business school’s culture benefits from Alec Horniman’s wisdom as a thought leader in the fields of leadership, organizations, change and ethics. I’ve also noticed that the more a company stresses its ethical policies…the more ethical problems it seems to have.
