American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) recently released a fantastic collection titled “ The ASTD Management Development Handbook ”. This book provides current thinking on various management aspects by practicing management professionals. I am grateful to Lisa for inviting me to write in this book.
Despite its perceived importance, for the most part, companies have a miserable track record when it comes to managing their people. Companies consistently get culture wrong because they go about assessing it, and attempting to manage it from the top-down, not the bottom-up. But what does this mean?
As organizations across the globe quickly shift to remote work structures, much of the responsibility for ensuring continued success falls on the shoulders of managers. To ensure success and engagement within their team and the organization as a whole, managers must focus on their employees’ core needs: clarity, communication and consistency.
Here’s a quick gut check: If a new employee, with no training or handbook, watched a film of all your activities for a couple of weeks, how would they describe your culture? How will you and your managers communicate at least five times, through five different channels? What you do matters way more than what you say.
