There is a new definition of leadership in our lexicon. Let’s say you have the choice to make between choosing one person for a senior leadership role over another. Perhaps it’s because we still cling to the great man theory of leadership. What we need is a different measuring stick in our selection criteria.
Let’s call this methodology what it is: a recipe for leadership. We seek these quick fixes to leadership dilemmas like we’re shopping on Amazon.com and expecting next-day delivery, especially if we’re new leaders. Perhaps it’s because as managers, we face a horde of challenges. So, we rely on the leadership recipe.
This according to a recent survey by Right Management. Without going too far into the psychology of connection, let me just summarize by saying simply that we are humans, not machines. Connection is diminished when we feel we are being micro-managed or over-controlled by others. This is consistent with other research.
