Joseph Grenny was up next talking about influence and leadership. Of all the topics on the agenda I was most excited to hear what Joseph had to say about influence. I have found that influence is often misunderstood, frequently abused, and rarely leveraged to its full extent. I Think Not.
Rarely will you come across a static opportunity in the sense that it will stand idle and wait for you to act…Significant opportunities are not only scarce, but they typically operate on the principal of diminishing returns. So much so, that if you don’t think timing is everything - think again. I Think Not.
The harsh reality is that great numbers of leaders continue to operate in a vacuum by sequestering themselves away in the corner office and attempting to lead from afar. So the real question is this…how does a CEO get to the point of being so disconnected from operations that he or she just doesn’t have a clue? I Think Not.
You’ll find confident leaders have broader spheres of influence, attract better talent, engender more confidence, and earn more loyalty and respect than do those that lead with solely with their chutzpa. I think not. While confidence can be mistaken for arrogance, and vice-versa, they are clearly not interchangeable terms.

Also, a common response is to confuse a sales engine, fulfillment process, operational process, technology platform, or any number of other areas as business models, where this is not the case. Furthermore, a business plan, strategic plan, marketing plan, capital formation plan, exit plan, etc., are also not business models. I Think Not.
Great businesses are in constant search of improvement, innovation, change, disruption, knowledge and other strategic leverage points that lead to a competitive advantage or operational enhancement. Well actually, no it’s not. Don’t fall into the rut of allowing your business to be trapped in a perpetual state of static thinking.

It’s at the C-suite level an executive must be on top of his/her game as they have the broadest sphere of influence, the largest ability to impact a business, and they also now have the most at risk. Forget span of control and think span of influence. Control is about power – not leadership.

If you crush the individual character and spirit of those who form your team, how can your team operate at its best? Respect is earned by honoring commitments and doing the right thing regardless of opinion, sentiment, or influence. The strongest teams don’t weed out or neutralize individual tendencies, they capitalize on them.
In 140 characters or less, elections are influenced, news is being broken, relationships are being created and expanded, brands are being built, trust is being build, influence is being generated, and products & services are being sold. Even solid world class institutions like the University of California Berkeley under the leadership of Chancellor Birgeneau & Provost Breslauer are firing employees, staff, faculty and part-time lecturers through “Operational Excellence (OE) initiative”: last year 600 were fired, this year 300. The moral of the story is this…A lack of delegation creates operational bottlenecks, delegation confused with abdication creates organization chaos, and effective delegation of authority vs. tasks creates personal and operational excellence. Gut instincts can only take you so far in life, and anyone who operates outside of a sound decisioning framework will eventually fall prey to an act of oversight, misinformation, misunderstanding, manipulation, impulsivity or some other negative influencing factor. The good news is that there is a cure for all four of the preceding problems: Items one through three can be solved with an emphasis on leadership development and talentmanagement, and item four can be solved by holding the board of directors accountable for CEO performance and firing an apathetic CEO. Great leaders do the right thing regardless of circumstances, situational context or other influencing factors.
