The culture required to drive a strategy of innovation is different from the culture required to develop efficiency or operational excellence. The challenge leaders face is that there is no one perfect culture. Culture needs to vary depending on your business strategy.
So much so that we see them as “the way things work” and forget that bureaucracies were once innovations too. So matrices, in a sense, led to the worst of both worlds, a cumbersome organizational structure and the inability to adapt to fast changing contexts. The truth is that networks are informalstructures.
Leaders today must continually strive to find the balance between formal and informalstructures. Team members need to help shape the course of action. It is critical to an organization’s success.
