Over the past two weeks, I’ve had the distinct honour of being recognized by two organizations for my work in the field of leadership. Drucker, and placing one spot below Bill Gates. The first came from Inc.
Because the key to innovation isn’t processes, stagegates, weird exercises, or competitions. The key to innovation has been and always will be People. I view the commitment to innovate, in the companies I’ve worked for and with, as a spectrum of lobsters - from cooked, to live, to rare blue ones. Blue Lobsters.
Leadership. To its credit, GSK still owns Macleans and although it is no longer the #3 brand, chomping at the tails of Colgate and Crest, Macleans has benefitted from contemporary marketing and dental care innovation in a few geographies. In the case of the former, they typically would want to know why and how could they innovate their current product to regain their position as number one. While it may have mitigated the clients'' losses some of the time, the innovation was inevitably reactive, unscientific, and not robust nor holistic. Fast forward to today.

We are often asked whether the best way to structure for innovation is top-down or bottom-up. Bottom-up approaches work well for incremental (keeps you in the game) innovations. Breakthrough (changes the game) innovations, contrary to popular belief, need a top-down approach. The answer is both, but it depends.
