I believe, as a consequence, that we need more significant and different investment in leadership development, especially where we need transformational change. If leadership begins with the individual, then let’s start there. We need to redefine which leadership capabilities matter most. My suggested solution. My example.
And high unemployment combined with the current economic malaise has forced many companies to cut back on middle-managers and travel. All of this creates a toxic environment for leadership development. New technologies are being created at a rapidly increasing pace. Traditionally developing leaders is a mentoring activity.
Top-down, one-dimensional leadership models are hopelessly outmoded in today’s rapidly changing world, and they waste the leadership ability that is present throughout an organization. This approach recognizes that leadership has to be fluid and flexible and that the roles leaders and followers play must shift to suit the situation.
